Comparatives & Superlatives

Cümle genellikle than ile tamamlanır çünkü hangi şeyle karşılaştırdığımızı belirtmemiz gerekir. Kısa sıfatlarda sıfatın sonuna -er eklenir ve than getirilir; uzun sıfatlarda ise sıfatın önüne more gelir. Örneğin Ali is taller than Veli cümlesinde tek heceli tall sıfatı -er alırken, This book is more interesting than that one cümlesinde üç heceli interesting sıfatı more ile kullanılır.

Kısa sıfatlara -est eklenir, uzun sıfatlardan önce the most getirilir. Superlative cümlesinde grubu belirtmek için in ya da of kullanılır: She is the best student in the class, He is the tallest of the three brothers.

Hangi yapıyı seçeceğimizi belirleyen en pratik soru şudur: Kaç varlıktan söz ediyorum? Eğer iki şeyi yan yana koyuyorsam comparative kullanırım: Which is cheaper, the bus or the train? Eğer bir grup içinden tek bir tanesini seçiyorsam superlative kullanırım: Which is the cheapest transport in the city? Yani karşılaştırma sayısı ve grubun büyüklüğü, comparative ile superlative arasındaki seçimi doğrudan belirler.

Son olarak comparative yapısını güçlendirmek için much, a lot, far, a bit gibi kelimeler kullanılabilir: Istanbul is much bigger than my hometown. Eşitlik anlatmak istiyorsak as ... as, eşitsizlik anlatmak istiyorsak not as ... as yapısına başvururuz. Bu yapılar, than ile kurulan karşılaştırmaya alternatif bir yol sunar ve günlük konuşmada çok sık geçer.

Kurallar

  1. Tek heceli sıfatlarda comparative için sıfata -er eklenir, superlative için -est eklenir ve başına the gelir (tall - taller - the tallest).
  2. Sessiz harf + sesli harf + sessiz harf ile biten kısa sıfatlarda son harf çift yazılır (big - bigger - the biggest, hot - hotter - the hottest).
  3. -y ile biten iki heceli sıfatlarda y düşer ve yerine -ier / -iest gelir (happy - happier - the happiest, easy - easier - the easiest).
  4. İki heceli -y ile bitmeyen ve üç heceli sıfatlar more / the most alır (careful - more careful - the most careful, expensive - more expensive - the most expensive).
  5. Comparative yapısı iki varlığı karşılaştırır ve genellikle than ile tamamlanır; superlative yapısı bir grup içindeki tek en üstün varlığı gösterir ve the ile kullanılır.
  6. Superlative cümlesinde grubu belirtmek için yer ve topluluk için in, belirli bir grup için of kullanılır (the best film in the world, the oldest of the three).
  7. Comparative'ı güçlendirmek için much, a lot, far, a bit, slightly gibi zarflar kullanılır (much more expensive, a bit cheaper).
  8. Eşitlik için as + sıfat + as, eşitsizlik için not as + sıfat + as kullanılır (She is as tall as her sister, He isn't as fast as me).
  9. -er ya da -est ekini almış bir sıfatın önüne more ya da most getirilmez; iki yapı aynı anda kullanılmaz.

İpuçları

  • Sıfatı görünce önce hece sayısını say, sonra kaç varlık karşılaştırıldığına bak; iki varlık varsa comparative, gruptan biri seçiliyorsa superlative gelir.
  • Cümlede than varsa comparative, the + -est ya da the most varsa superlative beklenir; bu iki ipucu seçenekleri hızla eler.
  • Superlative cümlesinde the unutulursa cümle eksik kalır; comparative cümlesinde ise the kullanılmaz.
  • Sınavda 'more + -er' ya da 'most + -est' gibi çift yapı görürsen o seçenek neredeyse her zaman yanlıştır.
